A superhero name in four steps

Most heroes are built from the same parts. Follow the steps below and you can name a hero in a minute.

1. Power or themeWind and speedGale
2. Name shapeRank + wordCaptain Gale
3. Alter egoA plain civilian nameMara Lindqvist
4. Weakness hintOptional taglineCaptain Gale, the Breath Between Storms

The alter ego is worth the time. A plain civilian name gives the hero a contrast, and a good contrast gives a story.

What makes a hero name stick

The oldest hero names use a simple word and a clear image, such as a flying hero named after the sky or a night-time hero named after the dark. Superman first appeared in Action Comics in 1938, and the plain, direct style has lasted for generations.

A villain name works differently. Because villains need to be threatening, they often use harder sounds or a title: Doctor, Lord, Madame. Pair a short hero name with a longer villain name, and the contrast sells the rivalry.

Powers, themes and origins

Pick a power before the name, and the name can hint at the weakness. A hero named Frostguard likely avoids heat, and a hero named Echoshift might need a quiet room to focus.

For the heroes’ foes, try the Villain Name Generator and Evil Name Generator. A group of heroes can use the Superhero Team Name Generator, and the Magic Power Generator gives ideas for abilities.

Avoiding names that already exist

Many simple hero names are already used by famous characters, so a quick search saves trouble. If you plan to publish a comic or a game, check that your name does not clash with a trademark.

Adding a second word usually solves it. Nightstrike might clash, but Nightstrike Meridian does not, and the extra word can carry a bit of story.
