Squad Name Generator

Our Squad Name Generator creates names for adventuring parties, gaming teams and small crews, from “The Last Lanterns” to “Dice Goblins.” It suits D&D groups, online squads, one-shots and any table that needs a name before the first roll.

What makes a squad name work

A squad name has to be short enough to shout and clear enough to remember. Two or three words is plenty, and a name that sounds good out loud usually survives a whole campaign.

Tone matters as well. A serious group wants something like The Last Lanterns, while a chaotic one is happier with Dumpster Knights. Pick the tone your table already has, because a name that fights the group’s habits gets dropped by session three.

Squad names by mood

Serious: The Last Lanterns, Iron Fangs, Midnight Outriders, Lucky Seven, The Crimson Few, Silent Oaths

Chaotic: Dice Goblins, Chaos Gremlins, Dumpster Knights, Snack Goblins, Loot Dragons, The Tavern Regulars

Formal crews: The Silent Lantern Squad, The Crooked Dagger Crew, The Rusty Shield Company, The Midnight Raven Gang

Running jokes: The Original Iron Fangs, Rowdy Rats Unlimited, Wild Hounds Mostly Sober, Broken Shield Minus One, Probably Heroes

A name that becomes a story

Take Broken Shield Minus One.

The party began as five friends hired to guard a caravan, and the caravan master kept a shield painted with all five of their names. When the rogue left after the first ambush, the shield cracked in two. Now every town they enter wants to know who the “minus one” was.

A squad name can start a story before the first session. It gives the group a past, and it gives the GM a rumor to plant in every tavern.

Tips for naming your table’s group

Vote on three names and pick the one nobody hates. If the table cannot agree, take a nickname from the first big mistake the group makes, because mistakes are the funniest source material.

For a full party roster, our DnD Party Name Generator covers the same ground in a D&D style. If the squad is a gang or a guild, try the Gang Name Generator and Guild Name Generator.

Hired groups can use the Mercenary Company Name Generator, and sea-going crews can use the Pirate Crew Name Generator. For bigger power blocs, see the Faction Name Generator.

Naming the wagon, the ship and the tavern

Once the group has a name, the things around it need names too. A party that owns a wagon might call it the Rusty Lantern, and a party that rents a room might claim the corner table at the Last Inn.

These small names make a base feel like home. If the players name their own wagon, they will defend it, since people care more about something they named themselves.

Try giving the squad a motto too. A short phrase such as “We will be late, but we will arrive” works well, and it gives the GM something to bring back when the group does something unexpected.

Squad Name Generator FAQs

What is a good name for a D&D adventuring party?

Pick something short that matches the group’s tone, such as The Last Lanterns for a serious party or Dice Goblins for a chaotic one.

How do I choose a squad name for my group?

Shortlist three names, vote, and keep the one the table likes best. A running joke from the first session often beats a serious name.

Can I use these names for gaming teams?

Yes. They work for online squads, clans and teams as well as tabletop parties.

What if the name is already taken?

Add a word or a number, such as The Original or Minus One, to make it unique.
