How old west names worked
Frontier names had two layers: the name a person was born with and the name the town gave them. Plain first names such as Josiah, Silas and Hattie were common, and many were paired with a short surname of Scottish, Irish or English origin.
Nicknames did the heavy lifting, because a town needed a quick way to tell two Johns apart. Well-known figures from the period, such as Doc Holliday, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, are remembered by a title or a nickname as much as by their given names.
A frontier name, built in layers
| Layer | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| First name | Old-fashioned and plain | Silas, Josiah, Hattie, Clementine |
| Surname | Short and rooted in the old country | Calloway, Harlan, Tate, McCrae |
| Title | Job or rank | Doc, Sheriff, Reverend, Judge |
| Nickname | A trait or a deed | Dead-Eye, Two-Guns, Calamity |
You rarely need all four, because a nickname alone, such as Dusty Pete, is often the most memorable choice.

Using wild west names at the table
A sheriff and an outlaw should have names that show their sides, so Sheriff Harlan sounds steady while Rattlesnake Sue sounds like someone you check twice before turning your back on.
For the scenery, our Cowboy Name Generator adds more cowhands and drifters, while the Ghost Town Name Generator names the places they left behind. Outlaws can use the Bandit Name Generator and Gang Name Generator.
A new settlement needs a name too; try the Town Name Generator and the Tavern Name Generator for the saloon.
Writing a frontier town
A town needs a cast, and five names are enough to start. Add a sheriff, a saloon owner, a doctor, a banker and a stranger, and the table has all the roles it needs for a night of play.
Give each one a clear want. Sheriff Harlan wants quiet, Doc Mercer wants a drink and the stranger wants something nobody will say, so the first conversation already has tension.
