What defines an order

An order is a group bound by a vow. It could protect pilgrims, guard a relic, keep a library or hunt monsters, and the name should tell outsiders what the vow is. A good order name sounds solemn, but it also leaves room for secrets.

Most names follow the same pattern: a group word, a quality and a symbol. “Order of the Silver Flame” gives you all three, and the symbol is easy to put on a banner.

Different kinds of orders

The group word changes how the order feels. Knights suggest swords and horses, whereas Sisters suggest cloisters and healing. A covenant sounds like a pact with a power, and a vigil sounds like a watch that never ends.

Giving an order depth

Once you have a name, write three facts about the order. Who founded it, what is their vow, and what do they hide? Those three answers are enough to run a scene when the party meets a knight in a grey cloak.

Also give the order a flaw. An order that guards a library might refuse to share its books, which creates conflict with heroes who need an answer. Flaws make orders feel like groups of people instead of costumes.

Ranks, symbols and vows

Once the name is set, the rest of the order follows. Pick a symbol, because banners and seals make the group visible, and then pick three ranks so members know where they stand. For example, an order of the Silver Flame might have Candle-Bearers, Wardens and a single High Keeper. If you add a short vow, such as “we guard what others forget,” the whole order gains a voice.
