NPC Generator
Generate a full NPC below, with a name, a quirk, a want, a fear and a secret.
Our NPC Generator creates a ready-to-play non-player character in one click: a name, a quirk, something they want, something they fear and a secret. Use it for D&D sessions, tabletop games or fiction when the party suddenly decides to talk to the baker.
Click for five names, click again for more, and copy any name with the icon beside it. A rare name appears in gold now and then.
What each part of the NPC does
Every line the generator gives you has a job at the table. The quirk lets you voice the character in seconds, and the want gives the character a reason to talk to the party. The fear makes them easy to pressure or protect, while the secret gives you a surprise to reveal later.
| Part | What it gives you | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Name | A way to refer to the person | Right away |
| Quirk | A voice or habit to act out | In the first few lines |
| Want | A goal that connects to the party | When the NPC asks for help |
| Fear | A pressure point | When things get tense |
| Secret | A hidden fact for later | When the plot needs a twist |
Using the result in a session
Read the quirk first and start talking. Because a quirk is a physical or verbal habit, it carries the character even if you forget everything else, and the players will remember the person who counts things out loud.
If the party stays for more than a minute, bring in the want. An NPC who wants something is a quest in disguise, and the fear shows the party how to help or how to lean on them.
Keep the secret to yourself until the story needs it. You do not have to use it, but if the players push, it gives you an answer that feels planned.
Making an NPC fit your world
The results are intentionally generic, so adapt them to your setting. A secret that works in a city of guilds may need a small change in a frozen village, so swap in the right institutions. You can also reroll just for the quirk and keep the name you already had.
For recurring characters, write the result down and add one line after each session. Over time, a randomly generated innkeeper becomes the person the party actually cares about.
Pair this tool with the Human Name Generator when you want a longer list of names, and use the Tavern Name Generator to place the NPC at a table. The Fantasy Plot Generator turns a secret into a story, and the Villain Name Generator helps when the secret turns out to be dark.
Turning one NPC into a small story
A single result can grow into a mini quest. If the NPC wants a pardon and fears the town watch, the party can help them or turn them in, and each choice shows what kind of heroes the players are.
You can also combine two NPCs. When one NPC’s want matches another’s secret, you have a plot that the players can uncover without any preparation.
NPC Generator FAQs
What does the NPC generator give me?
Each result has a name, a quirk, something the NPC wants, something they fear and a secret. That is enough to run a short scene without preparing.
Can I use the NPCs in my D&D game?
Yes. Every character is generic, so you can drop them into any setting or system.
How do I keep NPCs from sounding the same?
Use the quirk as the voice. A habit like counting aloud or speaking in questions is easy to keep consistent.
What if the secret does not fit my story?
Reroll or change it. Treat the generator as a starting point, not a script.
