Ent Name Generator
Our Ent Name Generator creates names for tree folk, from “Oakroot” to “Yewbark, Shepherd of the Trees.” The style is inspired by walking trees, treants and forest guardians, and it suits D&D, novels, games and any story with an old wood that can speak.

Names that grow with the tree
In Tolkien’s books, the ent Treebeard explains that his name is always growing, and that it would take a long time to say because it is like a story. You can borrow that idea: a young tree has a short name, and an old one has a longer one.
| Age | Name length | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sapling | One short word | Oakroot |
| Young tree | Two parts | Elder Oakroot |
| Old tree | Name plus a title | Oakroot of the Grove |
| Ancient tree | A name that tells a story | Oakroot, Who Has Seen Ten Thousand Springs |
That table also gives you a tool at the table. When the players meet an ancient ent, let it take a long time to say its full name, and they will understand how slow its world is.

Playing a slow creature
Ents move at the speed of seasons, so give them a different pace. Have an ent answer a question after a long pause, and the players will feel the weight of every word.
A grove also needs a reason to act. If loggers have started cutting at the edge, the ents will take a year to decide, and the party has the time between then and now to stop the axes.
Where tree folk fit in a world
Ent-like beings live alongside other forest people. The Dryad Name Generator and Druid Name Generator suit the people who speak for trees, and the Forest Name Generator names the woods.
For other plant folk and fey, try the Fairy Name Generator, and for wood elves living in the canopy, the Bosmer Name Generator.
Giving a grove its own history
A grove should remember things. If an old ent named Oakroot has watched a river change course, he can tell the party where a lost road used to run, because trees keep long memories.
This also gives you a quest hook. A villager asks the party to find the road, and the only one who knows the way is slow, patient and not sure the party deserves an answer.
