The names are original, written in the mood of cosmic horror fiction without copying any existing creature.
Why strange names feel frightening
Cosmic horror works because the characters cannot understand what they face. A name helps by sounding almost pronounceable, so the reader senses meaning that stays out of reach.
Sound does most of the work here. Hard stops and long vowels feel heavy, and repeated sounds suggest chanting, which is why names like “Nyaruun” feel like something said in a ritual.
| Sound pattern | Effect | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy stops (k, g, th) | Weight and age | Kthulon, Ghar’eth |
| Long vowels (oo, uu) | Slow, droning feeling | Nyaruun, Ithuun |
| Apostrophes | Breaks that suggest alien speech | Yth’aroth |
| Double letters | A hiss or stutter | Ozzexis, Xalax |
Three kinds of name you will need
A horror story usually needs three kinds of names. The entity gets an unpronounceable one, the cult that worships it gets a more human one, and the investigators get ordinary titles that make the contrast sharper.
| Type | Style | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Entity | Invented, hard to say | Vhulagoth, Zothoma |
| Cult or society | A human group name with a dark twist | The Black Tide Order |
| Scholar or witness | A title plus a name | Professor Vhulagoth, Archivist Zothoma |
| Place | Mundane with a wrong detail | The Sunken Chapel, The Lower Library |
Running the horror at the table
Do not explain the entity. The more you say about it, the less it frightens the players, so a single name in a half-burned journal can do more than a full stat block.
Also keep the human names ordinary. A cult leader called Mother Salt feels more dangerous than one with a thunderous title, because she could live next door.
Pair these names with the Lich Name Generator, Necromancer Name Generator and Undead Name Generator for darker campaigns. A quiet start in a Ghost Town suits the mood, and the Secret Society Name Generator builds the cult behind it.
Writing names the characters cannot say
One effective trick is to let the characters mispronounce the name. If a scholar writes “Vhulagoth” as “the V-thing” in her notes, the reader senses that the name resists language, and the horror grows from that gap.
You can also shorten a name over the course of a story. A cultist who begins by chanting the full name may end by whispering only its first syllable, which shows fear rising without any narration.
