How names change after the end of the world

When the old systems collapse, people keep their given names but gain new ones. A mechanic becomes “Scrap,” a healer becomes “Doc,” and a traveler is known by the road. As a result, apocalypse names tend to be short, practical and built from whatever the survivors still have.

Places follow the same rule. Settlements are named for the thing that keeps them alive, such as a well, a gate or a scrapyard, because a name should tell visitors what they can find there.

Building a wasteland faction

Factions are the easiest way to give a wasteland politics. Each group needs a name that signals its habits, so players can guess whether to trade, fight or run when they see the banner.

Naming towns that survived

A surviving town usually grows around one asset. Cinderwell has a clean well, Scrapyard has salvage, and Ashgate has a wall, so each name explains why people stayed. If you add a second detail, such as a leader or a rule, the town becomes more than a stop on the map.

It also helps to include old-world remnants. A settlement named “Mile Marker Nine” or “Bunker Nine” hints at what stood there before, and players enjoy puzzling out the past from a sign.

Using these names at the table

Give each survivor one name that is easy to remember and one detail the players can notice, like a mask or a limp. Keep the list short, because a wasteland feels more dangerous when only a few people can be trusted.

For other worlds, try the Cyberpunk Name Generator, Zombie Name Generator or Mad Scientist Name Generator. The Gang Name Generator helps with raiders, and the Town Name Generator names the settlements.

Naming the world that fell

The disaster itself needs a name, because survivors rarely call it by its scientific label. Some say “the Fade,” others say “the Long Winter,” and the choice shows what people blame. If you pick one word that everyone repeats, your wasteland gains a shared memory that feels real.

It also helps to name the years. Characters might say they were born “in the Third Dust,” so your calendar works as a hint about history without a long lore dump.
