What a guardian name has to say

A guardian name must sound dependable. Players should feel safe near it, so firm syllables and strong images such as stone, iron and shield work better than fragile ones. The name should also hint at what is guarded, because a gate warden and a temple warden face different threats.

Many guardians are also old. Their names may be older than the kingdom around them, and that age gives the character authority before it says a word.

What are they guarding

A great guardian name often points to a duty. A guardian of a pass is called by the road, a guardian of a tomb is called by the dead, and a guardian of a spring is called by the water. Making that link clear gives the player an easy hook.

Writing a memorable guardian

The best guardians have a rule. They may let anyone through who answers a riddle, or refuse anyone who carries a blade, and the name often reveals the rule. If the guardian is called “the Faithful,” it will not break an oath, so the party must find another way.

A touch of humor also helps. A grim stone guardian called “Old Stoneface” feels more alive than a nameless statue, and players may remember him fondly even after fighting him.

Letting a guardian change

The best guardians are not static. A sentinel who stood at the gate for a thousand years might finally grow tired, or learn to trust a stranger, and the name can reflect that change. When the party earns the title “friend of the gate,” the guardian’s name has become a story in itself.
